The opportunity to develop novelty consumer gifts arose and he ran the buying office for a large Canadian chain store, producing hundreds of goods made in a range of Asian nations. This gave Tom the opportunity to travel throughout the region learning production and export issues first-hand. Later, he was instrumental in coordinating a joint-venture factory in Mainland China for a Taiwanese firm.

He later joined Budweiser Micronesia and managed the overseas production of Budweiser promotional products. This prompted Tom to further develop his skills and contacts in product development in Asia.
